TAPS Public Transit Buses on the Road in Allen

When the TAPS Public Transit bus arrived at the south parking garage across from Allen Event Center at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, November 18, it marked the first official stop on one of three routes that connect riders with civic, office and retail centers in the city of Allen. A few minutes later, Heywood Brown, the first paying passenger, boarded the bus at Allen City Hall, headed to DART’s Parker Road Station in Plano.

TAPS-Allen01Officials at TAPS are satisfied with the response so far. “A lot of time and effort went into planning this route for Allen,” said Brad Underwood, CEO and Executive Director. “Each time we partner with a city we get progressively better at developing routes, timetables and other logistics that make for a successful launch.”

Through a partnership between Allen and the regional transit agency TAPS, the distinctive blue, green and white buses will become a familiar sight along the city’s major thoroughfares.

The Allen project is designed to help get workers to their jobs, but anyone can ride. The fare on any of the Allen routes is $1.

Three routes combine to get workers to and from their jobs in Allen by connecting key city destinations with DART’s Parker Road Station in Plano. Seventeen bus stops are connected to hubs north and south, that allow riders to transfer easily.

“Our main goal —the city’s and ours— was to get this route up and running in time for the holidays. We think these new routes will take a lot of single occupant vehicles off the streets.”
